Two Hearts Are Better Than One

Abby waitingWhy did we even think about getting Zoey in the first place?  It was because our older dog, Abby, was displaying extreme separation anxiety when I would leave in the morning (I am always last out of the house), pouting, laying on the bed, and generally being unresponsive.  There was no question that she was lonely in the apartment all day long.  She hungered for play time with other dogs and humans.  When I would come home from work, she would attack me wanting to play; when I would take her down the hall to play with her friends, she would romp happily with them.

So we endeavored to find Abby a little sister (we never thought of getting a boy).  A lot of research went into the effort.  We hoped that Abby would connect with a dog immediately.  She didn’t.  But we did — Zoey stole our hearts from the moment we first laid eyes on her.  She was playful, friendly, emotive and clearly wanted to be loved.  She is also an extremely rare color of Coton de Tulear; most are all white, Zoey is black and white.  It was an easy decision to want to make her another member of our family.

Zoey and Abby did not get along for a little while after we brought Little Z home from the hospital (Abby avoided her before we took her there — we’re now convinced it’s because she smelled imminent death on the little one).  Zoey wanted to play and romp with Abby all the time, Abby with Zoey only part.  But slowly but surely, as Abby came to realize that Zoey wasn’t going anywhere, the barriers between them started to come down.  One of us would come home from work to find at least one of Zoey’s pee pads shredded and strewn all over the living room floor.  Or we would find their toys littering the floor.  Eventually, we would find them sleeping together or next to each other.

Zoey is a rambunctious puppy, which means that she often gets after Abby more than the older dog would want, but in general, their relationship is working out exactly as we had hoped.  Our dogs are not just sisters but have become best friends.  They play together, sleep together, and act crazy (dog-like) together.  Abby is teaching Zoey how to be sweeter and calmer.  Zoey is teaching Abby to be more of an extrovert and a flirt, especially with interested strangers on the street.

Having more than one dog does add to the owner’s workload but we have found it more than worth it.  Not only did getting Zoey lead to our mission to stop puppy mills and the stores that enable them, but, more importantly, she has provided us, and Abby, with more love and friendship than we could have imagined.  Our dogs are happier together than they would have been apart; and we are happier to have two of them.

Nervous

So by this point next week I will be at the puppy auction bidding on Zoey’s Mom and Dad. I cannot publish this blog yet as there is a chance as the word could get to Missouri. I doubt Evelyn really cares as long as her dogs bring good money. I hav been watching videos online and trying to prepare myself as best as I can for Friday and Saturday. I don’t think anything can prepare me.  I watched the movie Earthlings and made it into about minute 21 before the tears came.  Strike that, the tears and come and gone and come again and at minute 21 is when I had to turn it off.  I just couldn’t handle it anymore.

One thought that comes to my mind is what if there are protesters there?  I will be horrified but then again I want there to be protesters there.  I want people there to feel uncomfortable.  But, it’s in the middle of nowhere Missouri and I have not seen anything about it online from blogs or posts so I presume there will be little stir other than a race of puppy millers to increase their profit.

Zoey Takes a Toke of Central Park

Abby doing her grass ritual post-pool...not on the grass.I have been walking the girls around the neighborhood and taking them to the community garden.  We are having a bit of a heat wave here in the city so I saw the playground across the street and saw little Z all overheated.  Luckily, one of the good things about this tiny park is that it has sprinklers for the kiddies.  Those sprinklers also work for puppies as long as they are on their leashes.  So I got the long extend-a-leash and took Z and A into the park where Zoey had a fabulous time.  My friend, Debbie had Zoey and watched as she ran around like crazy trying to figure out how it was “raining” in some places and not in others.  Abby on the other hand…well she just kind of hung back and watched the spectacle so I got some water and put it on her head to cool her down before our trek to Central Park.  Zoey looked like a wet rat.

Abby adores the park.  She loves grass more than anything!  You understand, Abby is a rescue dog that grew up in the South.  This dog is not used to the concrete jungle.  You even as much as take her through the park in a taxi and she begins to whimper.  So, we get to the park and Abby is shocked due to the proximity and that she is actually at the park after dusk.  Zoey, well Zoey just doesn’t understand grass.  Abby immediately jumps into the grass and starts rolling over and over in it.  She throws her legs up in the air and just rubs her back against the ground twisting from side to side.  Zoey inspects her, the ground, and the dirt but doesn’t seem that enthused.  She runs around a little but just doesn’t seem to know what to do with this crazy stuff called grass.

I then realize that this may be the first time Zoey has been on grass.  She doesn’t know what it is.  She doesn’t understand it.  I wonder what it feels like to her paws.  Does she know she is supposed to pee on it?  She has no clue.  Maybe she is frightened by it.  She just watches as her sister lives it up and she sits there alone and confused.  You see I realized then that raising Zoey is going to be different.  She spent all of her life (that is until she got us, or we got her) in a puppy mill.  She lived in a cage that would have a wire bottom so the puppy farmers (God love them) could spray in their cages some chemicals for cleaning (while the dogs are in the cages none the less) and then hose them out without the burden of ever removing a dog.  She went from welping unit to wire cage to transportation truck cage (I don’t like to think about how many dogs she shared a cage with during any of these times).  And then to my favorite pet store where you guessed it…cage.  To the ICU…cage and then to my home…FREEDOM and Central Park….GRASS!!!!

Debbie and I sat back and watched as Zoey observed Abby in her grass ritual.  Zoey continued to walk around and then flop in the grass putting her head in it.  Then, it was like a switch flipped and Zoey ran over to Abby to get closer to observe this peculiar grass rolling, turning, rubbing, scratching, digging behavior.  She got closer and closer and then she joined her.  Abby never stopped mind you but Zoey took one small roll.  She got up shook it off and took another little roll…this time just a little bit longer.  And before long, there they both are just rolling away in the grass.  Zoey had found the joy of grass.  It is amazing how we can take such little things for granted.  When I first moved here I yearned for trees and grass but how sad is it that my little puppy never knew what it was till she made it to the middle of NYC?

Making plans for a trip back home

So when I lived in the South/Midwest I had no idea it was the Puppy Mill capital of the world.

It wasn’t something anybody ever talked about really.  Now there were a multitude of dogs/puppies always for sale in the paper.  BUT, you will find that in any local or national newspaper.  I realized my first dog, Lady, came from a hobby breeder.  They only had collies and had one litter at a time.  I had asked for a collie my entire life since I knew how to write.  I kept sending letter off to Santa for years always with my #1 being a Lassie Dog or Collie (as I got older).  I finally got one when my parents realized after about 7 years that this obsession with a dog would not go away and I was relentless.  So, I got my first dog, Lady.  God, I miss her so much.  I was just a kid and wish so much she could have lived longer but I am happy to report that she lived a long life and was in absolutely no pain when she went to Dog Heaven.  We had no decisions to make as she died naturally in her sleep.

This trip back home is for much more different reasons.  In a way it is a different reason.  I am going home to visit my dog, visit my parents, visit my home (that is still not occupied).  But, I am also going to visit some puppy mills while I am there.  Even writing that scares me.  I have so much more to tell but I can’t right now.  Just trust me on this one.  I have seen enough puppy mills online that hopefully I am able to see them without crying or hurting anyone.  Trust there will be many, many posts in the future as the trip works its way out.

Michael Vick Backlash

So I have been getting some backlash on my views on Michael Vick.  For example, he has done his time and deserves a second chance to make a living.  I guess my thoughts are that this was not a one time thing.  Michael Vick did this for over 6 years.  The news seems to minimize the details behind the story.  I still haven’t heard one newscaster say that Michael Vick used jumper cables and wet dogs down to electrocute them.  Instead all I hear are about are second chances.  Fine, give the guy a second chance.  But, does he need to be a role model as a quarterback for today’s youth.  I think the NFL and the Phillies should possibly think about this instead of can this guy help us win the super bowl?
