Abby on her own

08-28-09
Leslie and I had a long conversation last night about why it might actually be OK for Abby to stay here without her while she and Zoey are on their mission. Although this morning wasn’t easy for Abby (we had to put her back in the house while the three of us left for the airport), she handled it well although she was so happy to see me that she almost knocked me over when I got back from the airport. LOL. As usual, she’s got a flossie in her mouth that she will only eat on her own time. But now, it’s like the old, pre-Zoey days — she doesn’t have to worry about someone else stealing it from her. She’s just chilling on the floor next to me with the flossie next to her.
In a way, the symbolism of just Zoey returning to the city and state where she was born and hopefully being reunited with her mom and dad is certainly smile inducing. And it might just be better for her to experience that by herself, without the big sister around that she equal parts loves and torments.
I hope that Zoey and her mom are able to in some way recognize one another after Leslie saves her tomorrow — that would be wonderful symmetry.

Leaving on a jet plane

Me an Abby

Me and Abby

Soooo, who did decide that nine minutes was the most appropriate time for a snooze on an alarm clock? Who is this person, Abby, Zoey and I want to know. Inquiring minds want to know!!!
God I absolutely hate, hate, hate leaving Abby in NY when she knows exactly what is happening. She sees the bags packed but she hasn’t seen HER bag come out yet. It is amazing how smart animals can be.

What We’re Going to Have to Deal With

So the dogs that are being auctioned off on Saturday are now online.  Wow, what a frightening list!  If you can believe this, there are 15 pages (!) worth of dogs being auctioned, almost all of which have sired or whelped dozens of puppies since the mill started operating about 7 years ago.  Many, many breeds are represented, males and females alike.  In all, it appears we’ll have to sit through close to 200 different auctions.  I have to steel myself for what’s coming — dogs being treated like meat, tossed around, held up by their legs, considered chattel that are only as good as their ability to reproduce.

I was raised not to wish bad thoughts upon other people, but I can’t help but have a wry smile over the fact that the owner is retiring from the milling business because of her “health.”  If the world is just, she will receive the same care under similar conditions to those she forced upon her dogs for so many years.

A Horrible Website

If you want to be horrified, go to kennelspotlight.com.  It’s written from the perspective of a puppy mill owner/breeder and is as you would expect.  Perusing the articles on the front page make clear that kennel and mill owners view their animals as just that, animals, meant to live in the wild, prey on weaker animals and even unsuspecting humans, and breed more of the same.  I want to make one thing clear and that is that I am not against RESPONSIBLE hobby breeders.  I don’t consider myself a hard core animal activist.  But, I am sure kennelspotlight would refer to me as what they call animal rights activist/assailant.  One article is even completely dismissive of the concept “man’s best friend,” stressing that it is a figure of speech and mindset that makes no sense and is completely fabricated.  Anyone who has known the pleasure of having a pet KNOWS that the unconditional love a pet provides is a wonderful, un-duplicable feeling.

An anecdote: my mother watched our dogs for two days while we moved earlier this month.  She is a dog liker who never wanted one when her kids were young.  And she fell completely in love with the two dogs during their short stay at her house.  In her words, “they transformed my home.  Now that they’re gone, it’s like the house is empty.”  I wish the author of that horrendous article and the purveyors of that horrible website could speak with her for just a few minutes.  Maybe they’ll even be open minded enough to listen and learn.  But probably not.  That’s what we’re up against.

Packing up for Missouri

So today I start packing for the big trip to Wheatland, MO. I am going to go ahead and send some crates, toys, food, medicine, etc. I have no idea what we are going to run into. I spoke with my mother last night and she may actually go with me on this adventure. I think it would be good for us. Plus, she can get a look at what Zoey came from. She actually mentioned that she might be interested in a dog. I will keep my fingers crossed!

Insomnia

1:34 AM – I cannot sleep. I just keep thinking about the puppy mill/dog auction on Friday and Saturday. I just hope that Zoey’s parents are not going to bring a ton of money as a ton of money we don’t have. I just have this fear that some puppy miller in overalls or something is going to get the Dad because we don’t have enough money to buy both him and her. And God, if there is any dog there that is sick or troubled I am going to have to take it. I can’t handle not to. What am I going to do? I am going to be around hundreds of animals, trapped in steamy cages and all of those dogs are going to look me right in the eye. I know I can’t save them all (that is unless I win this upcoming NY Lottery Mega Millions which reminds me to buy tickets manana.) but just to sit there and watch these helpless animals get auctioned off to people that are going to breed the shit out of them drives me insane. Everyone pray for the mega millions!!!

I had a disturbing talk with my mother who has now informed that Zoey will not even know her mother or father. Okay, so I assumed the father but I was hopeful that maybe, just maybe the mother might be able to smell one of her litter or vice versa. But, I am probably just dreaming. Regardless, our hope is to get these two Coton de Tulear’s out of this puppy mill and into a real home and quickly. I don’t know who that somebody is yet, but I am sure they are out there.
